Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi, also known as IIT BHU (Banaras Hindu University), is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was founded in 1919, as Banaras Engineering College and was later renamed. Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (IIT BHU) is one of India's top engineering institutes, it ranked 10th in the Engineering category and 31 in the Overall category by NIRF 2025. Also, it secured the 531st position in the QS World University Rankings 2025. The IIT BHU placements are organised by the dedicated and very active Training and Placement Cell (T&P Cell). 100% placement assistance is provided to the students. In recent placements, the IIT Varanasi's highest package recorded was Rs1.68 crore per annum. The top recruiters were Unilever, Visa, Jio, Myntra, Bajaj, Intel, HP, MasterCard, Phonepe, Google, Apple, etc. The IIT BHU placement cell also arranges many workshops, soft skill development programmes, etc. to prepare the students for the future. IIT BHU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD and combined courses (B.Tech + M.Tech) in around 4 streams, engineering, technology, humanities and sciences for both domestic and international students. Candidates can also avail the facility of part-time courses in some of these streams. Under engineering and technology streams, there are several departments like architecture, civil engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, mining engineering, material science and technology, biochemical engineering, biomedical engineering and many more. All the undergraduate courses (B.E/ B.tech) are 4 years long except the B.Arch program. Candidates need to invest a total of 5 years to study any Integrated Dual Degree course or B.Arch program at the Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi. On the other hand, M.Tech and M.Sc courses are of 2 years in length.
Candidates need to sit for JEE Advanced to get selected for B.Arch, B.Tech and B.Tech + M.Tech courses at IIT BHU. Hence, they must fill out the application form for the entrance test and join the counselling process afterwards to gain admission at IIT BHU in preferred courses. The institute has a student-friendly environment as well as numerous facilities within its 400 acres of campus. Being a 100-year-old institution, the campus is quite impressive. It has a retro Indian style. The IIT BHU campus includes buildings, departments, air-conditioned classrooms, well-equipped labs, halls, hostels, sports grounds and other sporting facilities etc. Students have access to free wifi connections anywhere within the campus.
Library: The central library of IIT BHU has an enriched collection of books and journals, especially in Engineering and Technology. The library has more than 80 thousand books and also e-book and e-resource features to provide students with as many study materials as possible.
Central Instrument Facility: CIF or Central Instrument Facility is one of the most crucial and specialized facilities offered by IIT BHU. It provides high-quality lab instruments and machinery for the students to perform their lab activities smoothly and with perfection. In IIT BHU, Students have access to high-tech instruments like Transmission Electron Microscope, Scanning Probe Microscope, Particle Image Velocimetry and many more.
Hostel: On-campus hostel facility is available for the students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi. Girls and boys have separate hostels and the food provided is completely hygienic and delicious. Both girls’ and boys’ hostels have a 24/7 wifi facility.
